CEO Message
The march of ISO9000:2000 and
other international standards like QS9000 / TS16949 / OHSAS
18001 is unrelenting. Many Malaysian companies have hit high
costs in this process and the benefits were a long time coming.
We can learn from their experience and avoid the many common
mistakes they made. This could give your company a major competitive
advantage not only internationally, but also within the domestic
market – against less
well-informed and organized competition.
At the most basic
level, companies go out to get approval to these standards
for the wrong reasons. They want a badge on the wall, they
want the logo on their notepaper, they’re being forced
into it by difficult customers, they can’t get into
foreign markets they would like, they want a marketing advantage,…
etc. etc. etc. All of these are valid benefits of certification,
however, if you use these as the driving force to certification,
the cost will almost certainly outweigh the benefits.
There are five golden rules to achieve this end:-
-
You must provide the highest quality product it is possible
to supply
-
At the lowest possible price
-
Delivered on the day or minute the customer required
it.
-
You must give everyone in your organization the power
to know about the customer and the people who work there,
so that all employees can all act with intelligence and
confidence in handling everything the customer throws at
you – instantly.
-
Across all departments and business functions everyone
must sing the same tune. They must all work in harmony with
each other to achieve common objectives.
Rules 1-3 we all know about and are usually achieved –
rules 4 and 5 are sadly neglected in most organizations and
yet they are the most important.
Usually, rule 4 is not achieved because the accounts department
does not share information with the sales force, the sales
people don’t share information with each other let alone
other departments, operations think the sales department will
sell anything, even the impossible, to boost their figures.
The primary reason for this is the fragmentation of data
around the departments and the inevitable total lack of information
from the data. This often results in incorrect or out-of-date
documents being referenced, customers being told several different
stories by different people in different departments and suppliers
not achieving the expectations partly due to inadequate information
from you.
If any of these comments is familiar, then you should be
considering action to correct it. It isn’t expensive
and the benefits are relatively rapid.
The ISO 9000 plaque on the wall and logo on the letterhead
should be the indicator that you are a successful, caring,
customer-oriented, quality business – it does not ,
in itself, make you one. At Genaxis,
we REALIZE your
quality imaginations for you.
